Admission policy

Civil engineering is an engineering discipline covering broad subject areas: design and construction of safe and reliable infrastructure, creation of comfortable and sustainable cities, solutions for environmental issues, and technologies in disaster prevention and mitigation. Department of Civil Engineering consists of a number of sub-disciplines such as structural mechanics, material science, fluid mechanics, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, planning and management. The purposes of the department are to foster professionals and researchers having problem solving skills with global and local perspectives and practical application of fundamental knowledge.

The International Undergraduate Program of Civil Engineering invites applicants who:

  • Understand fundamentals of mathematics, physics and chemistry.
  • Have sufficient English proficiency and information literacy.
  • Are motivated to study actively and make great effort to academic activities.
  • Have communication skills and cooperative attitude for cross-cultural understanding.

Curriculum Policy

Civil engineering is a discipline, in which one can learn technological knowhow related to creation of beautifully affluent area, preservation and restoration of natural environment, historical or cultural heritages, recycling of natural resources, maintenance/management of infrastructures indispensable for citizens’ lifestyle and mitigation of natural disasters.
The purposes of the department are to foster professionals and researchers, who have problem solving skills from global environmental perspectives, and are capable of applying various fundamental knowledge into practice. For that purpose, the curriculum has been developed with following policies.

1. Cultivate elementary knowledge necessary for independent professionals
Acquire sophisticated education and ability to think through taking basic engineering subjects such as mathematics, natural science and data processing in addition to the humanities and social science subjects, in KIKAN education during the first year.
2. Personality development with outstanding ethics towards society and global environment
Understand the relationship between technology and society/nature, professional ethics, duties and responsibilities towards local community as well global society, through specialized education in second year and beyond.
3. Attain high level specialized knowledge so as to deal with wide range of jobs as civil engineers
In the specialized education, learn not only the basics of engineering required as a civil engineer, but also the basic knowledge of specialized subjects of six major disciplines (Structural mechanics, Mechanics of materials, Hydraulics, Soil Mechanics, Environmental engineering and Urban planning) of civil engineering. Also, would be able to make full use of the technical knowledge gathered through tutorials and laboratory subjects, and devise solution for a given problem.
4. Cultivate management ability that helps realizing an efficient and planned execution within the given limits
Develop necessary management ability to accomplish tasks within specified time limit, by conducting various tasks in an efficient and planned manner through graduation research.
5. Fostering global communication ability
Acquire presentation ability through logical description, presentation and discussion of reports and research papers.
